Ravi Aiyer - head turner to head banger fusion guitarist
Late 80s in India , Heads would turn if anyone walks wearing Levis Jeans and that too a post faded one. Ravi was one of those head turners flaunting unwashed merky imported denims . Also he was head banger Rock guitarist in his own Rock Group WITCH HAMMER.
Ravi was my best friend Shridhar Gaytonde's cousin. I use to visit Ravi's house at Parel with Shridhar.Those days Hindi film music was considered a down market stuff. Ravi & Shreedhar would play English songs on Ravi's Deck from which I won't understand a single word . I remember whenever Ravi would play a particular song tape; on his deck , one of his dogs would start crying a loud. That was really a strange thing.
I tried to learn few basics of guitar from Ravi..but couldn't hit the right cord actually. Ravi was a good dancer too.He was John Travolta fan. He rarely would come down to Kurla. As he would take an evening walk with me & Shridhar in our colony ; everybody would stare at this thin boy in faded jeans with beautiful long silky hairs.
I remember One evening I was seeing off Ravi on Kurla bus stop. Bus was yet to come. I was about to speak something & Ravi stopped me . He started listening carefully to the sound coming from nearby loud speaker . It was Lata Mangeshkar with her sole stirring Aalaaps from the song SATTYAM SHIVAM SUNDERAM .
I could see the admiration in Ravis eyes. "superb" he murmured. I kept thinking how come this English cultured boy appreciating Lataaji's song.
Ravi went in his bus with his faded Levis jeans. We never met again for years...memories faded away like his Denim jeans & suddenly I see this article of Ravi...who has already become a veteran Fusion Guitarist' of Rock Music now. But natural if your inspiration is Lataji and John Travolta.
